Video: MoRuf – “Buckle Up”

16 Jan

Rapper, Moruf teams up with the very stylish guys at Street Etiquette to deliver a short film for his song “Buckle Up”. Produced by Andrew Cha, “Buckle Up” is a jazzy track from MoRuf’s newest (sickerthanyouravg approved) record Shades of Moo, that serves as an almost interlude–predominantly sampling the young adult classic, Love & Basketball. The video is tastefully made and carries some very New York sensibilities. As expected, MoRuf looks very dapper and is sometimes backed by a band that includes: Melo-X and Jesse Boykins. Watch the quietly striking visuals below.

Young New York rapper on the come up, Ishmael Raps delivers a new song called “Intro To Fame” . The catchy, sing-songy tune mainly focuses on Ishmael fantasizing and dreaming about what actually being famous will be like. Check it out below.

New Music: Bo Na$ty – “NA$TYTHE$QUAD”

29 Oct

Looking for that new new? We gotchu…

Meet up-and-coming rapper Bo Na$ty. The 21-year-old Brooklyn-bred (specifically East Flatbush)rapper bursts onto the scene with the self-produced, “Na$tythe$quad”.

Although Bo Na$ty has only been rapping for less than a year (since he failed a bio test), he sounds poised and ready. “NA$TYTHESQUAD” is the first single from his upcoming debut mixtape, Ugly Season. It serves well both as an introduction to the new artist and as a riotous anthem–with Bo spitting deftly about his crew over a skittering beat. The song has already passed “the car test” and is so catchy that you’ll find yourself hitting repeat–check it out below.

The Pro Era Cypher

19 Oct

Tis the season for …cyphers. After being overlooked by the BET Hip Hop Awards, Joey Bada$$ and a multitude of Pro Era affiliates decided to take matters into their own hands and create the “Pro Era Cypher”. The cypher was shot in Statik Selektah’s basement in black and white with Statik Selektah on the 1’s and 2’s, and was of course heavily influenced by the 90’s. Honestly, this cypher turned out to be much more entertaining than many of the lackluster performances presented in the Hip hop Awards cyphers this year. *Here comes the plug* If you find yourself feening for even more cyphers get ready for the sickerthanyouravg cypher, coming to you soon; you will not be disappointed. Watch the Pro Era Cypher as well as the most talked about cypher of the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards (TDE’s) below.

Rock The Bells Cancelled

26 Sep

In a shocking turn of events, the iconic Rock The Bells concert series has decided to cancel their remaining shows in Washington, DC and New York City due to low ticket sales. The idea that concert had initially been cancelled was brought up as a rumor, only to later be verified by the owner of Guerilla Union. This situation is particularly sad when remembering that this is Rock The Bells’ ten-year anniversary.

Below is Chang Weisberg’s press release in entirety:

Chang Weisberg, founder and owner of Guerilla Union states: “First and foremost, it is with great sadness and disappointment that we must cancel the Washington, DC and New York City Rock the Bells dates due to lack of ticket sales. I, along with our staff, the artists, and all of the sponsors, media partners, local promoters, and radio stations involved are thankful for our supporters and the fans that planned on attending. It’s extremely unfortunate that we can’t complete the last half of the 10th Anniversary Rock the Bells tour. We did everything in our power to save the show. Unfortunately, the financial loss would have been devastating. This festival has been ten years in the making.  I am truly sorry we could not produce the show for all the fans who did buy their ticket in support of.”

Full refunds will be honored at the location where fans purchased their tickets.

dr. eamz

Allow me to introduce you to an MC whose self-proclaimed mission is to keep Hip Hop alive – Dr.Eamz. This rising artist hails from Long Island, New York. For the past two years, he’s been working on his upcoming album Life Of A Starving MC. Judging from the tracks I’ve heard so far, L.O.A.S.M.C. is poised to be an incredible album. Dr. Eamz has earned himself a spot on my list of must-watch up-and-comers. He should be on yours too. Take a listen for yourself.

Freshman Week: #2 – Action Bronson

16 Feb

Hometown: Queens, New York

Action Bronson is a true anomaly (anomaly n. Deviation or departure from the normal or common order) – he’s Albanian, a well-respected gourmet chef, and DEADLY on a microphone. I don’t think I’ve been…no…I know I haven’t been this impressed with a “white rapper” since I started listening to Eminem. I first got a taste of Bronsoliño’s rapping ability when I accidently came across his video for “Shiraz” on YouTube. I was hooked on first listen, and immediately downloaded every mixtape I could find.

Action Bronson raps with a genuine, unadulterated, classic New York flair, and has drawn comparisons to the Wu-Tang Clan legend, Ghostface Killah. While the comparisons are certainly warranted (they do sound quite alike), Action Bronson is no copycat. He rhymes with a sense of humor and charisma that no one can imitate. His flow, beat selection, humor, presence, and catalogue (His debut album Dr. Lecter = Classic) make him a serious force to be reckoned with. Action Bronson is an MC you will be hearing about for a very long time.
