New Music: Kool John – “B*tch I Look Good” (Feat. P-Lo)

16 Jul

Kool John–who in my opinion happens to be one of the most promising members of the HBK Gang–recently released a new track entitled, “B*tch I Look Good”. The Ricmond, California native teamed up with his HBK crew member P-Lo to deliver this brazenly boastful summer track. “B*tch I Look Good” makes for a fun and catchy listen, be prepared to hear it at a kickback/party near you. Also, be on the look out for the release of Kool John’s upcoming record, ShmopCity.

New Music: Uzoy – “Cold Fronts”

16 Jul

Ever catch yourself wondering what a female, Nigerian rapper might sound like?

Well, Houston’s own, Uzoy (pronounced Uzi, like the gun) is here to answer that call. Putting labels aside, Uzoy delivers a dope new song entitled “Cold Fronts” after somewhat of a musical hiatus. Uzoy comes out swinging on the NVRSLPS produced track–rapping nimbly about inconsistent people that breeze through your life. Check out the track below and get hip to Uzoy.

STYA Presents: The Chicago Cypher

13 Jul

The good folks here at proudly present our very first Chicago Cypher, put together by our (and Chicago’s very own) Toyosi Yusuf (@IamNinoBlanco). Just like our first cypher in D.C., we did this to shed light on some of the rawest Hip-Hop talent the Windy City has to offer. We’re giving you a taste of Chicago, not Chi-raq , and the city is brimming with MCs ready to leave their footprint on Hip-Hop.

Special thanks to the students at Columbia College, Chicago for helping us put this whole production together.

Without any further ado…we proudly present to you:The Chicago Cypher

The Tay – Pink Syrup

13 Jun

Pink Syrup

Those of you who are fans of Dormtainment should be familiar with Tay, Dormtainment member/producer of their awesome mixtapes (more on that in a later post). If you’ve paid close attention to their videos and posts on their website, you’ll see that Tay does advertise his personal projects. I clicked on his link to see what he was about and was pleasantly surprised. Pink Syrup, his most recent release on BandCamp, takes you to a mystical island made of a stack of pancakes, home to naked women with fat asses floating in an ocean of this provocative pink syrup that gives the project its name. If that description doesn’t draw you in, listening to his “Syrupy Intro” (with your eyes closed and headphones in–trust me, just do it!), with its seamless blend of hip hop beats and syrupy-smooth jazz melodies, surely will.

You can find The Tay’s Pink Syrup not in your local grocery, unfortunately, but on Bandcamp where you can listen as much as you like for free online, or buy the entire album for $5.

Apparel: Modern Pharaoh

21 May

On Sickerthanyouravg we love showing love to brands doing positive things, especially in regards to Africa and people of African descent, so it was only right that we spread the word about Modern Pharoah. With the World Cup right around the corner, apparel company Modern Pharaoh has created a line of tees and snapbacks in honor of the African countries that are participating in the competition. The tees and snapbacks contain fairly simple color schemes and range in price from $25 – $35.Modern Pharaoh describes their movement as:

“Modern Pharaoh is an apparel company. Modern Pharaoh signifies our Return to Royalty. There is a sense of pride and purpose that we all possess. Somewhere along the line, we allowed others to determine who we are as individuals. When we allow that to happen, we lose ourselves and deprive the world of our individuality and the gifts that coincide with that. By accepting our gifts and letting our passion lead us, we are allowed to become the men and women we were always intended to be.”

Check out and show them some support.

New Music: Blitz The Ambassador – “All Around The World” Feat. Marcelo D2

21 May

Ghanaian American rapper, Blitz The Ambassador takes us on a global field trip with his new track, “All Around The World”. Featuring rapid fire bars from Brazilian rapper Marcelo D2 over dramatic production that contains breakbeats and drums galore, Blitz The Ambassador ups the ante on this track. The exciting track appropriately ends with the sounds of an airplane taking off. May we also add that “All Around The World’s” West African, Ankara flavored artwork may just have a spot in our hearts as some of the freshest cover art that we’ve seen in quite sometime. Check out “All Around The World” as well as Blitz’s upcoming international tour dates below. Also, if you aren’t hip to it yet, check out Blitz the Ambassador’s latest excellent full length record, Afropolitan Dreams (album review coming soon).
