New Music: Rapsody – “Illuminaughty” (Chinchilla)

5 Jan

Jamla artist, Rapsody does it once again with the 9th Wonder produced track, “Illuminaughty”. Assisted by 9th’s quietly restrained yet menacing production, Rapsody shines; plainly stated, this song is ice cold. “Illuminaughty” serves as the second release (following “Betty Shabazz”, another 9th Wonder x Rapsody track) from Jamla Record’s upcoming compilation album, Jamla Is The Squad, dropping on January 28th. Check out “Illuminaughty” as well as “Betty Shabazz” below.

New Music: ADD-2 – “Don’t Go”

5 Oct

ADD-2 is a chicago MC who recently signed to renown producer, 9th Wonder’s Jamla record label (shoutout to The Jamla Army). On “Don’t Go” he teams up with label mate Khrysis–a producer who lays down the richly soulful beat that ADD-2 flows over. “Don’t Go” is the first single from Between Heaven & Hell an upcoming effort from the two.

New Music: Salaam Remi “Makin’ It Hard For Me” Feat. Corinne Bailey Rae

19 Sep

Producer, Salaam Remi collaborates with British singer Corinne Bailey Ray and blesses us with “Makin’ It Hard For Me”. Corrine’s voice is the center of attraction; soothing and ethereal as ever–especially  refreshing due to us not hearing any new music from her for quite a while. Salaam Remi’s production accentuates Corrine’s vocals and serves as a beautiful backdrop. The song is set to be on Remi’s upcoming album, One: In The Chamber, due September 30th.

Throwback Thursday: DJ Premier Turns 47

21 Mar

Premier Collage

Oh…my…goodness. People who know me really well can tell you that DJ Premier (AKA Preemo) is one of my favorite human beings on this planet. If you don’t know who DJ Premier is, allow me to put you on immediately. DJ Premier is…
1. One of the very greatest Hip Hop producers of all time…
2. In my humble opinion, the most talented beatsmith to ever touch a turntable or MPC…
3. The man who crafted classic tracks on legendary East Cost Hip Hop albums, including Illmatic, Ready To Die, Reasonable Doubt, and Life After Death
4. The producer whose sound defined a whole era of Hip Hop,
5. One of the producers who inspired me to take up the art. The list could go on forever…

Today is Preem’s birthday, and it falls right on a Throwback Thursday. Without further ado, here are just a few of my favorite DJ Premier cuts. If you aren’t hip to his greatness, prepare to become hip right now. Enjoy!

Joey Bada$$ & Pete Rock: Classic In The Making

20 Feb

Joey n Pete.jpg

Joey Bada$$ has NO intention of slowing down. Earlier this year, he released “Unorthodox”, a track produced by the legendary DJ Premier. Now he’s in the studio with another legendary producer – Pete Rock. For those of you who are new to Hip Hop, Pete Rock and DJ Premier are, arguably, the two most influential producers in the history of East Coast Hip Hop. The fact that Joey has enlisted both of these legends means the following:

1. He has earned some serious respect. Remember…these guys worked with Nas…on Illmatic.
2. He doesn’t plan on selling out any time soon.
3. He intends for his upcoming debut album to be a CLASSIC.

Needless to say, I’m pretty excited.

Beat Tape: In Flight – A Tribute To Donald Byrd

11 Feb

If you’re a beatmaker who’s spends time digging in the crates (like myself), a jazz connoisseur, or just someone who just loves all types of music (like myself), the name Donald Byrd might ring a bell. Donald Byrd, one of the great jazz trumpeters of our time, passed away a week ago (February 4th, 2013) at age 80. Mr. Byrd did not depart from this world without leaving an imprint – he was one of the first (and only) bebop jazz musicians to successfully fuse soul and funk into his music, while staying true to his genre. His soul/funk-infused music has served as an inspiration to artists and listeners alike…

For all those who appreciate Donald Byrd and/or soulful music, here’s something for you – In the wake of Donald Byrd’s passing, two producers by the names of AGoNY and eLIMenCe collaborated to create In Flight, a beat tape comprised entirely of Donald Byrd samples. It’s beautiful to see artists paying homage to a legend. I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated this tape, and I know you will too.
