11 Sep

BuffaloBrave Artwork 1

This past Tuesday, upstart Buffalo MC ChaunSAY Mackin’ dropped an LP entitled Buffalo Brave. The tape features minimal guest appearances. However, the one song that does feature other MCs is one of the tape’s shimmering highlights. On “Everything’s Black”, ChaunSAY enlists two equally dangerous wordsmiths – Tia P. and Obie Iyoha (from Inglewood, CA and Ann Arbor, MI, respectively) for a 3-minute lyrical showcase. Check it out below, and be sure to check out Buffalo Brave.

Willie WAZE – “World Is A Ghetto”

28 Aug

Willie Waze

Northen VA MC Willie WAZE offers his take on police brutality and the situation in Ferguson, over a classic Geto Boys instrumental. Although the current racial climate is ugly, it’s beautiful to see artists using their craft to reach out and address the situation. Anyone who cares about the current state of affairs in this country will feel this one.

Gone Wallace – “CULTure”

Gone Wallace CULTure

Check out this Philly native’s latest addition to his ‘Expansion Pack’. “CULTure” finds Gone Wallace attacking conformity within the Hip-Hop industry (and among fans and aspiring artists) over a simplistic, futuristic AVID iLL production. STYA Presents: The Chicago Cypher

13 Jul

unnamed

IT’S FINALLY HERE!

The good folks here at SickerThanYourAvg.com proudly present our very first Chicago Cypher, put together by our (and Chicago’s very own) Toyosi Yusuf (@IamNinoBlanco). Just like our first cypher in D.C., we did this to shed light on some of the rawest Hip-Hop talent the Windy City has to offer. We’re giving you a taste of Chicago, not Chi-raq , and the city is brimming with MCs ready to leave their footprint on Hip-Hop.

Special thanks to the students at Columbia College, Chicago for helping us put this whole production together.

Without any further ado…we proudly present to you:The Chicago Cypher

It’s safe to say everyone here at SickerThanYourAvg.com we loves Cocaine 80’s. I think it’s also safe to say we all enjoy Jhené Aiko’s voice. For all you who haven’t heard, Jhené Aiko is getting ready to release her debut album Souled Out with Def Jam Records. Here’s the first single, “To Love & Die.”

The Tay – Pink Syrup

13 Jun

Pink Syrup

Those of you who are fans of Dormtainment should be familiar with Tay, Dormtainment member/producer of their awesome mixtapes (more on that in a later post). If you’ve paid close attention to their videos and posts on their website, you’ll see that Tay does advertise his personal projects. I clicked on his link to see what he was about and was pleasantly surprised. Pink Syrup, his most recent release on BandCamp, takes you to a mystical island made of a stack of pancakes, home to naked women with fat asses floating in an ocean of this provocative pink syrup that gives the project its name. If that description doesn’t draw you in, listening to his “Syrupy Intro” (with your eyes closed and headphones in–trust me, just do it!), with its seamless blend of hip hop beats and syrupy-smooth jazz melodies, surely will.

You can find The Tay’s Pink Syrup not in your local grocery, unfortunately, but on Bandcamp where you can listen as much as you like for free online, or buy the entire album for $5.

E.R.A. – The Breeze Card Chronicles

9 May

Breeze Card

Last year, we got the privilege of discovering E.R.A., a Hip-Hop artist from Atlanta, GA. I was personally quite impressed with The Dream Act, which showcased this MCs lyricism, wordplay, and soulful, breezy production. Now, I’m honored to present E.R.A.’s follow-up project, The Breeze Card Chronicles (The Breezecard is like Atlanta’s version of NYCs MetroCard). If you enjoyed The Dream Act, you’ll enjoy this too. The eclectic production and sharp wordsmanship (yes, that’s a word) earn my stamp of approval. Check it out below.
