Video Review: Mack Wilds – “New York: A Love Story”

30 Oct

Yesterday, our girl Toyosi dropped her third video review on actor Tristan Wilds aka Mack Wilds’ debut album, New York: A Love Story. Toyosi’s commentary on the album pretty much mirrors my own. While I had heard about the buzz that this tape was gaining in New York–its pretty much unheard of in the Bay Area. With that being said I’m always interested in testing out some new music for myself, but I was honestly a bit reluctant with this one; chalking him up as the black guy from 90210 probably trying to rap *insert eye roll here*–you know that “Disney Channel syndrom”e. Needless to say I almost missed out on a good thing. The album effectively introduces us to Wilds the musician by bringing us into this young man’s world, supported by a good voice and backed by excellent production. Check out the video review below!

New Music: Bo Na$ty – “NA$TYTHE$QUAD”

29 Oct

Looking for that new new? We gotchu…

Meet up-and-coming rapper Bo Na$ty. The 21-year-old Brooklyn-bred (specifically East Flatbush)rapper bursts onto the scene with the self-produced, “Na$tythe$quad”.

Although Bo Na$ty has only been rapping for less than a year (since he failed a bio test), he sounds poised and ready. “NA$TYTHESQUAD” is the first single from his upcoming debut mixtape, Ugly Season. It serves well both as an introduction to the new artist and as a riotous anthem–with Bo spitting deftly about his crew over a skittering beat. The song has already passed “the car test” and is so catchy that you’ll find yourself hitting repeat–check it out below.

New Music: Eminem – “The Monster” Feat. Rihanna

28 Oct

Eminem and Rihanna team up for the second time to create “The Monster”, the fourth single from the upcoming Marshall Mathers LP 2. Rihanna belts out the hook, singing “”I’m friends with the monster that’s under my bed/ Get along with the voices inside of my head/ You’re trying to save me/ Stop holding your breath/ And you think I’m crazy/ Yeah, you think I’m crazy/ Well that’s not fair.”. While the message of the song is interesting, I’m not really feeling this one (at all). However, it will be interesting to see what direction The Marshall Mathers LP 2 takes, especially with Eminem claiming that this album does not necessarily serve as a continuation of the original. Listen to “The Monster” below and judge for yourself; also, check out the track-listing for the deluxe edition of The Marshall Mathers LP 2 below.

Music Video: Jhene Aiko – “Bed Peace” Feat. Childish Gambino

28 Oct

Jhene Aiko drops a music video for her single “Bed Peace” from her upcoming EP, Sail Out. In the video, Jhene and Childish emulate John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s famous “Bed-In for peace”–a non-violent two-week long protest for world peace, that took place in 1969 during their honeymoon. The two, (Jhene and Childish) have great onscreen chemistry and the hippie vibes of the music video compliments Jhene’s overall laid back aesthetic. Watch the music video below and check out a clip from the original “Bed Peace” as well.

New Music: Jesse Boykins (III) – “Our Party”

27 Oct

jesse boykins

Don’t be fooled by the name, this isn’t some fast-paced party track. Instead Jesse Boykins drops a new beautifully, laid-back track–with Boykins’ soulful voice lending to the sensual and atmospheric nature of “Our Party”. The song seamlessly takes bits from Janelle Monae’s “What An Experience” as well as Alicia Key’s “No One” to create this “Mash-up”. Check it out below.

Music Video: PARTYNEXTDOOR – “Break From Toronto”

27 Oct

The OVO crooner, PARTYNEXTDOOR recently dropped a music video for one of my favorites songs on his mixtape, called “Break From Toronto”. “Break From Toronto” serves as a sort of interlude on the mixtape and samples Miguel’s beautiful “Girl With The Tattoo”. The music video also segues into “Wus Good/Curious”–another song from Party’s self-titled mixtape. This music video serves as many fans first time of clearly seeing the elusive singer, and surprisingly the singer looks like he could pass as a long-lost member of GBE (BANG BANG). All joking aside, Party’s hometown of Mississauga (the setting of both the song and music video) makes for a beautiful backdrop. It’ll be interesting to see the direction that Drake decides to take with PARTYNEXTDOOR.

New Music: Childish Gambino – “Worldstar”

27 Oct

This past week has been a pretty busy one for Childish Gambino

If you watched Donald Glover’s recent, entertaining interview with The Breakfast Club on Power 105–you probably watched the musician surprise interviewers by talking about his love for and then announcing that he had a song called, “Worldstar” on his upcoming album. Childish raps about everyone’s guilty ratchet pleasure over dope production that goes from sparse and rattling to jazzy; the song even utilizes the now infamous “WORLDSTAR” chant. “Worldstar” differs greatly from Gambino’s other recent release, “3005” while still fitting into the anticipated theme for Gambino’s upcoming sophomore album, Because The Internet, due December 10th. Listen to “Worldstar” below; also if you missed the aforementioned Breakfast Club interview or Childish’s standout (no really) “Pound Cake” freestyle on Sway In The Morning check it all out below.

Music Video: King Chip – “Deion Sanders”

27 Oct

King Chip recently dropped a music video for “Deion Sanders”–a song where he pays homage to the sports legend. The music video was directed by Hi Def and starts out with a clip of Sanders shouting out the Cleveland rapper and features some football clips of Deion back in his heyday. Use this to hold you over while waiting for Chip’s upcoming LP, Clevelafornia.

Sidenote: I’m feeling that Pink Dolphin hoodie that King Chip features in the video…

Music Video: Schoolboy Q – “Banger” (Moshpit)

27 Oct

Schoolboy Q recently dropped a music video for his riotous single, “Banger” from his upcoming album Oxymoron. Shot in contrasting black and white, while focusing solely on Schoolboy Q (with the addition later of a few of Q’s boys)–the simple video compliments the perfect song to wild out to.
