New Music: DJ Mustard – “Burn Rubber” Feat. YG & Joe Moses

28 May

Architect of the new ratchet movement, producer DJ Mustard dropped his new song, “Burn Rubber” this morning coproduced with DJ Official, featuring YG and Joe Moses. I must admit that as soon as I played this song my inner ratchet was released and I couldn’t help but yell “AYYYE”. If you go to parties, hearing a song produced by DJ Mustard is almost inescapable (especially in California) so I know that this song will probably soon be part of many summer party rotations. The song samples one of my favorite party songs of the same name, “Burn Rubber” by Too Short (a Bay Area classic) and is the first single off of Mustard’s upcoming mixtape, Ketchup. We do it for the ratchets too at sickerthanyouravg.

Memorial Day Rewind: Last week in music

28 May

If you’re wondering about the lull between this post and the last post made on sickerthanyouravg blame it on the struggle called life. (lol) While I’m wrapping up last weeks of school—finals and all—Chisom just moved out to New York to intern for the one and only XXL magazine (WOOT WOOT). With that being said I thought that it would be nice to take a moment and look back at last week in music;whether you’re letting your Memorial Day barbecue digest or scoping out some memorial day online sales, like me.

Beyonce releases the full version “Grown Woman”:
While we had heard snippets of Beyonce’s single, “Grown Woman” fans were feening to hear the full CDQ version of this song. Well the fans finally got what they wanted; I love Timbaland’s fun production on this song and the African influences. I can’t wait for the music video to this track. Go head Queen Bey.

While speaking of Beyonce, the Dream teamed up with Beyonce and 2Chainz to drop “Turnt”—a song that already had bloggers buzzing before even coming out. The song was definitely not what I expected but is a nice collab and makes being ratchet sound surprisingly smooth. While IV play is set to officially drop tomorrow it seems like you can listen to the entire album on Vevo.

Ciara Teams Up With Nicki Minaj
Ciara drops a new song from her upcoming self titled album, CIARA featuring the eccentric first lady of YMCMB. The song drew attention due to alleged shading of Rihanna by both Ciara and Nicki. I’m not really feeling this one but I love hearing R City’s touch on this, check it out yourself.

On the hip hop tip the Black Hippie crew dropped a dope remix to Rocko’s (controversial) “UOENO”. I must add that it was nice hearing Jay Rock snap on this track since he seems to have been in the background for a quite a while. Every member of TDE equally did their thing.

“Mojitos and Little Dragon”
Brooklyn’s own renaissance man, Melo-X drops a new summer tinged single, entitled “Mojitos and Little Dragon” produced by Abjo. The song is the first single from Melo’s upcoming EP GOD:HiFi (a follow up to GOD:LoFi), set to drop next month.

“100 Grand” (Remix) Music Video
The Bay’s own, Iamsu dropped a music video for what is basically one of my favorite songs out, “100 Grand” (Remix) the song features Californian rappers Kool John (The Bay) and Problem (LA) and also New Orlean’s Juvenile. The video was directed by Giovani Hidalgo and mainly features performance clips. I loved seeing an OG like Juve show love to up and comers from a different region and hearing how Juvienile’s flow complimented the track in general.

Chuck Inglish’s new solo EP
Chuck Inglish dropped his free ep Droptops, something that I was looking forward to. This tape would fit in at almost any Memorial Day kickback giving great summer music. Although lyricism isn’t Chuck’s strongest point, his music automatically puts you in a “cooler than” mindset; combine this with Chuck’s top notch production and this EP makes for a quality listen. My favorite songs at the moment are “Drops” and “Dangerous” I give this tape a rating of 4/5.

“In A Minute”
Chuck Inglish isn’t the only ex Cool Kids member putting in work. Sir Michael Rocks drops a new song called, “In A Minute” featuring Dash and Ab-Soul, produced by Mac Miller aka Larry Fisherman. I love Larry’s trippy production on this song and how it compliments Ab-Soul’s voice. The track is off of the upcoming While You Wait project which serves as a prequel to the also upcoming Banco.

New York’s own Joey Bada$$ announced on twitter that he will be dropping a new ep on June 12th entitled “Summer Knights”. June looks like it will be a busy one for new hip hop releases…

summer knights

Goodie Mob drops new music
Atlanta’s Goodie Mob drops a new single “Special Education” with Janelle Monae on the chorus. The song surprised many with Cee-lo rapping and not singing once in the song. I love the message and overall feel of this one. There was also an announcement made that Goodie Mob will be dropping a new album called, Age Against the Machine; the first album featuring all four members since 1999.

Macaroni Time
In the midst of Chief Keef’s eventful life ie. Getting arrested in Atlanta, allegedly getting engaged to a video “model”, etc. Keef makes time to drop an amazingly uneventful video for his new song “Macaroni Time”. This video differs from his older videos that were shot in his house due to him being on house arrest being shot instead in a…backyard. I’mma have fun trying to decipher this one, 3hunna.

Animal Pharm
Another Chicago native who is also quite controversial in his own right, Lupe Fiasco surprised listeners with a new track called “Animal Pharm”. Lyrically dexterous as ever, this is definitely full of “rewindable” wordplay.

Travi$ Scott drops Owl Pharoah
Freshman class member, Travi$ Scott drops his long anticipated Owl Pharoah. In my view this record is more of a free album rather than a mixtape. I have not been able to listen to this album thoroughly enough yet for a rating but it’s something worth listening to. I also had the pleasure of watching Travi$ perform for the time, this weekend at CSU East Bay’s Springfest.

Wale drops new music
I hate referring to an artist as old versions of themselves (ie. “Old Kanye”) but Wale’s new song “Love Hate Thing” featuring Sam Dew, reminds me of “old” pre MMG Wale. It has the soulful, slightly introspectiveness without coming off as simpish or forced–and best of all no “maybach” drops in the background.

Pharrell is Happy
The ageless Pharrell who produced the Despicable Me 2 Soundtrack which is set to drop next month, releases the infectious song, “Happy” from the soundtrack. Skateboard P’s vocals on this song are so sweet, combined with the positive lyrics that it almost forces a smile from the listener.

Biggie’s Birthday
The late Christopher Wallace AKA Biggie Smalls would have turned 41 on May 21st. In his honor Hot 97’s now infamous DJ, Mister cee dropped a special Birthday Mix
OF’s Earl Sweatshirt joins Mac Miller to drop his new song “Guild”; the song even has a basedgod shoutout and features a very different sound for the two MCs. I wonder when Doris is dropping…

and last but not least YMCMB apparently has signed Paris Hilton.

Mr. West Visits SNL

20 May

Last night, Kanye took the stage to perform at the Saturday Night Light season finale. He performed his brand new single “New Slaves” and the never-before-heard, rock-infused, “Black Skinhead” which samples Marilyn Manson. Kanye took it to twitter and later dropped the hand written lyrics to “Black Skinhead”. The name of Kanye’s upcoming album has apparently been confirmed (via Kim Kardashian’s Instagram) as Yeezus, with a release date of June 18. Kim also gives us a glimpse of a new all-red colorway for the Yeezys.

Yeezy Season is here… New Music: Kanye West – “New Slaves”

18 May

new slaves
Judge Kanye Omari West for his life decisions and ego all you want but there’s no denying that this man is a creative genius. Two weeks ago Ye simply tweeted out “June eighteen” and had the Internet wondering what it could mean–a due date, an album date, what? With news of Kanye playing the album for different industry insiders and performing new material it’s clear that June 18th is a tentative album date. With that being said–Kanye, using virtually no PR, has made it known (via twitter) that his new song/music video “New Slaves” will be dropping tonight worldwide through projection on various buildings in 66 different locations. Check if the video will air in a city near you on and watch Kanye perform the song on SNL tomorrow. Below is the video premiere in Williamsburg (also, am I the only one that detects a Frank Ocean feature towards the end; I’m excited):

New Music: The Weekend – “Kiss Land” and “John Carpenter”

18 May

Abel Tesfaye (AKA The Weeknd) drops two new songs after what seemed like a hiatus since the rumored post “OVOXO break up”. The songs start out with the title track “Kiss Land” and then emerges into the second song “John Carpenter” from his upcoming LP Kiss Land. The Weeknd is as dark and mysterious as ever, singing in “Kiss Land” about his sexual appetite with background screams that evoke thoughts of an amusement park. The song switches up and leads to “John Carpenter”, where we find Abel grappling with new found fame. A line that stood out to me was, “I went from staying at the same four walls for 21 years, to seein the whole world in just twelve months”. Illustrating how abruptly one’s life changes when you reach sudden fame, even an artist as low-key as The Weeknd. Listen for yourself below:

New Video: The Dream – “IV Play”

17 May

Today, Terius Nash (AKA The Dream) dropped the music video for his single “IV Play” which shares the same title as his album which will be dropping later this month. The music video is directed by Director X and oozes decadence, complete with a helicopter, furs, cars, video girls, and beautiful architecture. Honestly, the video didn’t particularly excite me, but “IV Play” itself is one of the best (if not the best) R&B songs that I have heard in 2013. Judge for yourself.

Chisom’s Two Cents: “IV Play” is my favorite R&B track of 2013…and while Christine may not have been THAT excited about the video, I thought it was quite nice… IVPlay

Kelly Rowland – “Dirty Laundry”

16 May

The beautiful Kelly Rowland drops a new song named “Dirty Laundry” today from her upcoming album, Talk A Good Game produced by the Dream. The production on the song is very simple and allows Kelly’s voice and expressive storytelling to take command of the song. In the song Kelly opens up and reveals a very personal side, singing about her relationship with Beyonce and an abusive relationship that she endured. With lines like, “Post ‘Survivor’ she’s on fire, but who wants to hear my bullsh*t? Meanwhile this n*gga is putting hands on me…I swear y’all don’t know the half of this industry” she gives us a glimpse of her life–letting us know that things truly aren’t always what they seem. This song has certainly piqued a new interest for me in Kelly’s upcoming project, check it out below.

Chuck Inglish – “Tangerine” Feat. Ashton Matthews & Kashflow

16 May

Rapper/Producer Chuck Inglish gives us another new song today, two weeks after releasing the single and music video for “Drops”. The new single, “Tangerine” (still trying to figure out why it’s called that) is the second single from his upcoming Droptops EP, and features Aston Matthews and Kashflow. Chuck Inglish’s production never disappoints, and this song is a testament to that. The chorus doesn’t lie when it says “this bass makes your face go numb”. I can definitely see Droptops, which is set to drop later this month, becoming a Summer of 2013 staple.

Rock The Bells Unveiled

15 May

The iconic Rock The Bells festival threw a unveiling party in Hollywood on Tuesday night. The sold out party was to unveil their lineup for the 10th anniversary of the concert festival and had people such as TDE and Jhene Aiko in attendance. It has been revealed that artists such as Black Hippy, Tyler The Creator, Kid Cudi, Earl Sweatshirt, Rakim, and many more will be performing at the concert. In addition, there will be “performances” by holograms of Eazy E and ODB á la the Tupac hologram that shocked crowds at Coachella last year. The festival has four stops; two being in California, one in New Jersey, and DC being added to the line up this year. Also, Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg and rapper Murs will be the hosts for this year’s festival. With all that being said and as someone who attended Paid Dues earlier this year, I can say that Rock The Bells will definitely be a festival worth going to. I for one plan to be in attendance this year (speaking it into existence).

A$AP Ferg – “Work” (Remix) Feat. French Montana, Trinidad James, Schoolboy Q, & A$AP Rocky

15 May

The A$AP Mob’s A$AP Ferg drops a music video for the remix to his street banger “Work”. The original song was initially on the Mob’s mixtape Lords Never Worry and the official remix dropped about two days ago featuring: French Montana, Trinidad James, Schoolboy Q, and A$AP Rocky. In my opinion the song could have easily done without French’s forgettable inclusion but Schoolboy’s line left me even more hype for Oxymoron. Will Ferg be the next to blow up out of the Mob? Also, shoutout to the young man featured in the video with the hair barrettes, we see you! (Lol)
